The Heart-Monitoring Mobile

23 Jun

Mobile phones are often described as vital, but it’s never had such a literal meaning than what the new “EPI Life” device offers. Unveiled at the excellently-named CommunicAsia conference, the small smartphone features all the usual refinements: light weight, touch screen, and of course an ECG machine instantly connected to a team of doctors.

The “Health Concierge” service works when you hold your fingers to sensors on the sides of the phone: it reads your heartbeat before sending the data to a team of trained cardiologists. They text the results back, letting you know if that funny feeling in your chest is “too much curry” or the slightly more daunting, “you need get to a hospital asap.” They can even help you get there in some regions, with private ambulances and the terrifyingly capitalist phrase “expedited patient admission for customers.”

It also creates the most scientific data plan options you’ve ever heard of, where free minutes and download caps come with a set number of ECG readings per month. More excitingly, EPI has announced that they’ll be offering this technology to other mobile manufacturers, so you can have a choice to go with your chest pains. We might see an iHeart application sooner than you think.

A Phone For Those Who Miss Watches

23 Jun

The mobile phone made wristwatches obsolete over a decade ago. We were almost positive people would notice by now. The more expensive the timepiece, the more exclusive the brand, the more it shows off how the wearer wants to spend lots of money to look good at the expense of sense. Almost every other device you carry now tells the time on top of its “actual” functions, making that chunk of metal on your arm a “I don’t understand this mo-dern world” badge.

This is bad news for beautiful clockwork, which is why Celsius X VI II (counter-intuitively called the “Celsius-ten-six-two” for maximum exclusivity) brings something back with tourbillon watch workings, powering the mobile phone. If you don’t know what ‘tourbillon’ means, it roughly translates as ‘the most beautiful and expensive cogs you could conceive.’

On top of being a phone, the Celsius does everything you’d want from a top-flight watch: it spins, it clicks, and it costs a truly insane £180,000.

iOS 4 For Your iPhone is Available Now

23 Jun

This is a big week for Apple fans as not only does the iPhone 4 go on sale on Thursday, but it’s also time for another iPhone OS update. Now known as iOS 4, this is the first major revision of the software since this time last year, when iPhone OS 3.0 was introduced.

iPhone users who wish to upgrade to iOS 4 should plug in their iPhones, open iTunes and select ‘check for updates’. Just to warn you, the installation process is a long one, so if you haven’t got an hour to spare, you may want to wait until you do!

The most significant change within iOS 4 is multi-tasking, or Apple’s interpretation of it anyway. Certain applications will now be able to run in the background to allow super-fast switching between them; helpful for IM, social networking and other Push-enabled apps. Other new features include folders, where apps can be grouped together, changeable wallpaper for the home screen and the lock screen, plus plenty of minor alterations such as an orientation lock, a global inbox, new Spotlight features and text-correction methods.

All of this sounds great, but not everyone is going to be able to enjoy these new features. First of all, if you own a 1st gen iPhone or iPod Touch, iOS 4 isn’t compatible with your device at all, and if you own an iPhone 3G or 2nd gen iPod Touch, you’re getting a limited version which won’t include multi-tasking, homescreen wallpaper support or orientation locking amongst other things. Prior to the iPhone 4’s release, only the 3GS will run the full version of iOS 4, so if you own one of the older devices, it could be time for an upgrade.

Top 14 Mobile Phones you can’t Buy!

16 Jun

I came across a few weird and wonderful concept phones and thought they would make a great subject for a blog post. So here you are 14 concept phones you can’t buy.

Sony Ericsson Concept – Is this fake?

Some say Sony Ericsson will release this phone in Feb 2007 but I seriously doubt it. Others say it’s a fake and has nothing to do with SE. The creator claims it will have 2GB storage, a 3.2 megapixel camera, an FM radio and a whole bunch of other features. One thing that is for sure is that it is one good looking phone!

Oynx by Synaptics and Pilotfish

The Onyx is a prototype handset that uses Synaptics’ new ClearPad touch screen. The aim of the concept is to act “as a remote for your life”, and, so say the designers, “because life is activity based, not application based, the concept illustrates how applications such as phone, GPS, music, teleconference and calendar events can work simultaneously.” Sounds pretty cool and looks good too, so it’s a shame it will never go into production.
